READING RESPONSE IDEAS
There are a variety of ways a reader can respond to the books they are reading. In order to delve more deeply into the text and interact with stories in more meaningful ways, it helps to respond to the books you are reading!
- Retell the ending of your story and write your feelings about it.
- Write about your favorite part of the book and why it was important to the story.
- Write about something that surprised you or that you found interesting.
- Describe an interesting or important character in your book.
- Describe parts of the book that puzzled you or made you ask questions.
- Make predictions about your book, follow the clues you obtain from the book, and see if your predictions are correct.
- Explain how your predictions might change in your story based on the evidence/clues from the text.
- Explain how the book reminds you of yourself, people you know or of something that happened in your life. How does this help you understand the story better?
- Explain how the book reminds you of other books, especially, the characters, events or setting. How does this help you understand the story better?
- Compare/contrast a character in your book to another character from another book. How are they similar? How are they different?
- What type of person is the main character? Infer a character trait and give 3-4 details from the text to support your belief.
- Pick a secondary character. Explain the relationship between them using evidence from the text.
- Explore how the main character changed over the course of the story. Explain how their feelings or actions changed and why.
- Write a letter to a character in the book, a letter from one character to another or a letter to the author.
- Write a diary entry in the voice of a character in your story.
- Describe what you would change about the story if you could rewrite it.
- Write a different ending to your book.
- Did you enjoy the book? If so, write a recommendation for it. If not, explain why.
- How is the book you are reading similar to other books the author has written?
- What is the problem the character faces in the story? How is it solved. Would you have done the same?
- Analyze and describe the author's craft. What was good about the author's writing? What things would you try to incorporate into your own writing pieces?
